Meet the Demosielle Cranes - Springtime birding in Kyrgyzstan 06 - April 2015

This a great time of year – spring migration is peaking and new species occurs daily depending weather especially the wind conditions. However the dates coincide with good numbers of roosting Demoiselle cranes in Eastern Kyrgyzstan, thrushes, wagtails, raptors, shrikes, etc.- and the mountainous species is fabulous with calling Himalaya snowcocks, redstarts busy with territory disputes, Wallcreepers calling early morning, and lots of more species busy with springtime activities after the long winter. Meantime it is still possible to get some of the Siberian winter visitors and even some of the rare and otherwise difficult species e.g. Solitary Snipe.

The weather and conditions are usually excellent – and the light is usually wonderful for photographers.

Before departure, Miksture mail a detailed list of birds.

APRIL 2016: TURKMENISTAN; Birding Turkmenistan. Desert and mountainbirds; e.g. Kopetdag Mnts: Migrants, Pander's Ground Jay, Egyptian Nightjar, etc.

Wildlife (Snow leopard) Expedition - December 2015

Please have a look in our program - available on the website, see under ""Snowleopard"

Selected tours

“During all my years in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, I never have experienced such wild nature and fantastic wildlife as this area along the Chinese border”

We have made this expedition since 2009 and with increasingly success. In March 2013 we were fortunate to have to Snow Leopard sightings; however never guaranteed. This area is by no means for the comfortable relaxed type of travelers. There are no dangerous aspects or unsafe things awaiting the traveler. We just have to emphasize that this tour is truly a wildlife expedition where the environments such as cold climate and harsh roads really demands patience and understanding of the concept by you - the traveler! We simply can’t predict the weather and circumstances and we can’t tell exactly when we arrive or how long we will be on the road. But what we CAN predict and promise is a visit to a truly magnificent area, and an adventure in the northern Himalayas very few people have experienced. Also can we promise the most experienced staff, enough and tasty food, and… really fantastic nature and wildlife!

This expedition will reveal some of the most unique mammals to be seen in Northern Himalaya. Unique mammals are on our target list: Argali, Siberian Ibex, Wolf and of course – great birds. We also hope of watching one of the most mythic animals on globe – the Snow Leopard, but we don’t deal with pure Snow Leopard Expeditions as its simply to difficult to make “agreements” with the Snow Leopard, however Miksture possess one of the world’s highest success rates when it comes to finding a wild Snow Leopard, at present November 2013 our success rate is still more than 70% when we include only-heard Snow leopards as well (it’s rare hear a Snow Leopard too…). On this expedition we travel deep into the heart of the Snow Leopards kingdom, and with the expertise of our team our chances for an encounter are raised from virtually impossible to reasonable.

Detailed program available at our website:

Tour start: In Bishkek March 2016

Guaranteed departure.

Welcome to the ultimate desert and mountain birding in Turkmenistan - Central Asian birding when it’s best!
Turkmenistan provides the best desert birding in central Asia! The Desert and Kopet Dag Mountains provides the most prolific and rewarding birding amidst unsurpassed beautiful scenery. Some of the most wanted Central Asian species makes it an essential destination for anyone with a serious interest in Palearctic birds. In addition there is a great selection of species present in Southern Europe, interesting subspecies as many European birds are on the edge of their eastern range here and migrants makes the birding impressive and challenging.

Miksture is a pioneer in Turkmenistan birding and knows already thoroughly the locations and where the birds occur. In short: The best and most rewarding birding.

Our team provides good meals, and we always make the journey as comfortable and smooth as possible. During the expedition we use 4 x 4 vehicles with 3 in each car! We don’t make any compromises when it’s about finding the birds, however we always make priority not to flush and frighten the birds.

Time of year is perfect!

Tour start: Pls contact Miksture for further details – we would be happy to organize and book your flight!

Second half of April is my favorite time of year for birding Turkmenistan. The breeding- migrants already turned up, thickets and bushes hide migrants and provide challenging and exciting birds – everything can occur, so to speak The spring makes the vegetation fresh, the light clear and sunny excellent for photo-graphing not blurred by heat – the temperature is moderate and comfortable for birding. Apart from the desert species the mountainous Kopet Dag border zone to Iran is among the least explored areas of Central Asia, and might bring goodies like Pander’s Ground-jay, lots of raptors, Macqueen’s Bustard, Caspian Snowcock, Cream-colored Courser, Black-winged Pratincole, Red-wattled Lapwing, White-tailed Lapwing, Pallid (Striated) Scops-owl, Egyptian Nightjar, See-see Partridge, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (many), European Bee-eater (many), European Roller (many), White-winged Woodpecker, Oriental Skylark, White-throated Robin, Rufous Scrub-robin, Pied Bushchat, Finsch’s Wheatear, Variable (Eastern Pied) Wheatear, Rusty-tailed Wheatear, Sykes’s Warbler (many), Olivaceous Warbler, Hume’s Whitethroat, Upcher’s Warbler, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, Eastern Orphean Warbler, Menetries’s Warbler, Bay-backed Shrike, Saxaul Sparrow, Desert Sparrow, Pale Rock-sparrow, Crimson-winged Finch, Desert Finch, Oriental Skylark, Red-headed Bunting, White-capped Bunting, Grey-necked Bunting, etc.

Possible rarities as Radde’s Accentor, Marbled Duck, Plain Leaf Warbler, Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, Wire-tailed Swallow, etc.

Another advantage of birding Turkmenistan this time of year is the occurrence of species like most warblers and buntings which are present here, while not yet appeared in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Booking is open!

4. MONGOLIA BIRDING June 2016, pls contact Miksture

Tour leader: Michael Westerbjerg Andersen/Miksture

In Mongolia the nomadic lifestyle, even today is still the norm, a land of awesome landscapes, pro-fuse wildflowers and fantastic birdlife. Mongolia conjures up images of endless grasslands, the wastes of the Gobi Desert, yurts and wild horsemen. This is the land from whence came the hordes of Genghis Khan and his successors, newer less colorful history followed and today Mongolia is an unknown land, far away in the heart of Asia, about which one hears little.

With its tiny population of only two and a half million scattered across a huge area, it is one of the least densely settled countries on earth – a true wilderness where most of the land is still the domain of wild creatures rather than man. Mongolia is the crossroads of East Asia. In the north is the southern edge of the Siberian taiga, in the center the seemingly endless steppe and in the south the sands of the Gobi Desert. Adding further diversity to this mixture are the mountains and a multiplicity of lakes and marshes.

The wide range of habitats is reflected in an exciting avifauna which encompasses both Siberian and Central Asian species, including species unique to Mongolia and its immediate surroundings. Prime specialties include Oriental Plover, Asian Dowitcher, Black Capercaille, Swinhoe’s Snipe, Relict Gull, Pallas’s Sandgrouse, Mongolian Lark, Hodgson’s Bushchat, Red-throated Thrush, Chinese Bush Warbler, Azure Tit, Henderson’s Ground Jay, Saxaul Sparrow, Père David’s Snowfinch and Pine and Pallas’s Reed Buntings, while a rich supporting cast includes Swan Goose, Stejneger’s Scoter, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Amur Falcon, Demoiselle and White-naped Cranes, Mongolian Gull, Hill Pigeon, Asian Short-toed Lark, Pale Martin, Blyth’s Pipit, Brown Accentor, Güldenstädt’s Redstart, Eyebrowed Thrush, Thick-billed Warbler, White-crowned Penduline Tit, Steppe Grey Shrike, White-cheeked Starling, Mongolian Finch and Grey-necked Bunting.

Late spring and early summer is a delightful season when birds are in breeding plumage, and migrants are passing through on their way north. Marvelous birding and travel through wide open spaces with very few people make for a wonderful and never-to-be-forgotten experience. A real adventure in fact. This journey provides excellent birding in this great country. Miksture and our Mongolian team know thoroughly the locations and the birds of course - in short: the best and most rewarding birding. Our team provides good meals, and we always make the journey as comfortable and smooth as possible. We don’t make any compromises, however we always make priority not to flush and frighten the birds.

Tour start: Pls contact Miksture for further details – we would be happy to organize and assist!
